Melissa Diedrick’s story connects closely to The Starlight Cafe by Rob Alexander by showing how small businesses create community, not just profit. In the story, the cafe is a place where people gather, build relationships, and feel a sense of belonging. Similarly, Melissa’s Cup n’ Spoon is designed to bring families and locals together. Both emphasize “third places,” spaces outside home and work that foster connection. They also reject impersonal corporate environments in favor of authenticity and care. Melissa’s decision to leave a “cutthroat” job and build a community-focused business reinforces the idea that meaningful spaces can deeply impact people’s lives.
Cup n’ Spoon Story
By: Connor Bell
Tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city lifestyle Melissa wanted to start a new chapter in life with her husband and three sons. She wanted something smaller with more connection to those around her. This decision ultimately led Melissa and her family to Meadville, Pennsylvania, a place Melissa immediately connected with after visiting.
Before settling in Meadville, Melissa had already begun building her entrepreneurial identity. She started her own business based on a family recipe, initially working out of her kitchen. Over time, she expanded her efforts into mall kiosks and large-scale craft shows, traveling extensively across states such as Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania. Through persistence and strategic marketing, she was able to grow her idea into a nationally recognized brand. However, despite her success, Melissa found the corporate and large-scale business environment to be highly competitive and impersonal. She describes feeling like a “small guppy in a big shark tank,” which led her to step away and pursue a more meaningful and community-oriented path.
After moving to Meadville, Melissa quickly became inspired by the town’s close-knit atmosphere and vibrant downtown. One night during a walk with her husband, she noticed a small storefront for lease and jokingly suggested opening a frozen yogurt shop. When her husband doubted the idea due to the limited space, she took it as a challenge saying, “challenge accepted!” Melissa conducted market research and used social media to gauge interest, discovering that while ice cream was popular in the area, frozen yogurt was not widely available. Recognizing this gap, she decided to move forward with the idea. The result was Cup n’ Spoon, which quickly gained support and enthusiasm from the local community. Melissa attributes much of her success to the personal connections she fosters with customers and her genuine investment in the community. Emphasizing the importance of giving back and creating a welcoming environment where families can gather and enjoy themselves.
Family plays a central role in Melissa’s journey. Homeschooling her sons has allowed them to be involved in her businesses from a very young age, teaching them essential skills such as customer service, responsibility, and entrepreneurship. Her husband also plays a crucial supportive role, serving as her backbone throughout her ventures. Ultimately, Melissa’s story is about more than business success, it reflects her commitment to family, community, and creating meaningful experiences for others. Choosing to settle in Meadville, she found not only a place to live, but a place to belong and give back to.
